Do fathers not discipline their children? A father does and he does it because he loves them. He wants them to make better decisions, because he doesn't want them to get hurt. Hebrews 12:5-6 (NIV) says:
And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: "My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son"
God is our heavenly father and so is it not expected of him to discipline us? God loves us and calls us his children. There is no reason for him to not discipline us. However, we must not fear God's discipline. Discipline is used on us so that we mat grow and know God better. Hebrews 12:11 says:
No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
God disciplines us because, he loves us and wants us to be closer to him. He wants us to be stronger and make better decisions. He wants us to be stronger and make better decisions. He wants us to have righteousness and peace. God's love is shown through his discipline in this way, because if he did not love us, then he would not discipline us.
For more verses I highly recommend that you read Hebrews 12:1-13.
